A $455-million ruling for Indians

August 08, 2008|From Times Wire Reports

A federal judge ruled that American Indian plaintiffs are entitled to $455 million in a long-running trust case, a fraction of the $47 billion they sought. U.S. District Judge James Robertson's number is close to government estimates.

The lawsuit -- filed on behalf of half a million American Indians and heirs -- claims they were swindled out oil, gas, grazing, timber and other royalties overseen by the Interior Department since 1887.
