The Dodgers' playoff hopes this season may benefit from the acquisition of Manny Ramirez, but I wonder what damage will be incurred to the wonderful tradition that is Dodgers baseball.
If you cut Tommy Lasorda, he'll bleed Dodger Blue. If you cut Manny, he'll simply use it as an excuse to not run out a ground ball. He is a hitting savant who understands little, and cares even less, about the sport he plays. So be careful what you ask for Los Angeles, the game (and your baseball heritage) is more important than one season.
Bill Plaschke, please do some homework on your prospects and don't say that Andy LaRoche is not considered much of a prospect. In preseason rankings, LaRoche was ranked by Baseball America and Baseball Prospectus as the Dodgers' No. 2-rated prospect. Scouts love the guy, so don't be surprised if he turns into an All-Star in a year or two. I don't know if the trade will turn out well for the Dodgers (it might), but it could blow up in their faces.
Joe Torre advising people on what they should do with their hair? What's next -- Tommy Lasorda telling us how to be slim and trim?
