August 09, 2008|From Times Wire Reports

A passenger train traveling from Poland smashed into a collapsed bridge, killing at least six people and seriously injuring 13, officials said.

The crash occurred near Studenka, about 210 miles east of Prague, when parts of a bridge under reconstruction tumbled onto the track.

The driver of the train, headed from the Polish city of Krakow to Prague at 85 mph, hit the emergency brakes but was unable to avoid crashing into the debris.

The engine and first six cars derailed. An estimated 400 people were onboard, 54 of whom had bought tickets in Poland, according to a Polish railway official.
