30 militants die in fighting at border

August 09, 2008|From Times Wire Reports

At least 30 militants and seven paramilitary troops died in clashes near the border with Afghanistan where helicopter gunships and mortars pounded insurgent hide-outs.

A government offensive in the Bajaur region came two days after a militant assault on a security outpost that officials said killed two troops and left 25 militants dead.

Officials said the death toll in the fighting rose to seven among government forces and that 30 to 40 militants were killed.
