Huntington Beach economic development director placed on leave

The city's human resources department is conducting a personnel review of Stanley Smalewitz. A city spokeswoman declines to elaborate on the reasons for the review.

Huntington Beach's economic development director has been placed on administrative leave, a city spokeswoman said this afternoon.

Stanley Smalewitz was removed from his post Aug. 7 by interim City Administrator Paul Emery and is being investigated as part of a city personnel review by the human resources department, said city spokeswoman Laurie Payne.

Payne would not elaborate on the nature of the confidential review, which she said is in its early stages.

Smalewitz began work as Huntington Beach's economic development head in October 2005. Prior to that job, he served as director of community development in the city of Commerce. Smalewitz also previously worked for the cities of Alhambra, Inglewood, Riverside and Los Angeles, in addition to a redevelopment consulting company.
