THE PERSONAL FILE

Nothing dirty or sexy, just silly and poetic

August 24, 2008

CRAIG WRIGHT may be best known as a scribe for hit TV shows such as "Six Feet Under," "Lost" and "Brothers and Sisters," but he has also etched a name for himself as a playwright, with such works as "Orange Flower Water," "Recent Tragic Events" and "The Pavilion," for which he was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize.

He is creator and executive producer of ABC's "Dirty Sexy Money," which begins airing Season 2 on Oct. 1. The West Coast premiere of "The Pavilion" opened last week at the Lyric Theatre and runs through Oct. 5. He recently confided to Liesl Bradner how it's the stuff off the beaten path that feeds his creativity.

HEAVY ROTATION ON YOUR IPOD

I've been listening to "Cape Canaveral" by Conor Oberst quite a bit. Jason Anderson's "The Library" and "If I'm Waiting." The album from Icelandic band Sigur Ros, "Med sud I eyrum vid spilum endalaust." It's so amazing.

TV PICKS

I don't have one.

DVD RENTALS

The most interesting thing I've seen lately is the six-hour version of "Scenes From a Marriage," the Ingmar Bergman miniseries. That was great, and "Tarnation," a documentary about growing up with a schizophrenic mother.

ON THE BEDSTAND LIBRARY

I'm rereading "The Rings of Saturn" by W.G. Sebald. I read "Lives of the Modern Poets" by William H. Pritchard about three times a year. "Paradise" by Donald Barthelme. My newest book is "Netherland" by Joseph O'Neill and "The Oxford Book of American Poetry" by David Lehman. It's the best anthology of poems I've read.

TOP WEB DESTINATION

Wherethehellismatt.com. It's a four-minute video of this guy who went around the world doing the same silly dance.

YOUTUBE PICKS

The Groundlings' sketch "Open and Open Case" and "Kenny Rogers' Jackass," a spoof from MADtv.

OFF THE BEATEN PATH

I saw this play last year at UCLA's Theatre Festival, "Gospels of Childhood," performed by Poland's Teatr Zar. It was the best aesthetic experience I've had in years.

GUILTY PLEASURE

Coldplay's "Viva la Vida." It's so catchy. I heard it on a Jet Blue flight by accident. Such a perfect pop song. Almost makes you feel as if pop music is more than just itself, which it isn't!
