GAME OF THE DAY

Petit is pitching in for Diamondbacks

August 24, 2008|From the Associated Press

PHOENIX -- Yusmeiro Petit is excelling in whatever role he's asked to fill for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Petit pitched six solid innings and the Diamondbacks padded their West Division lead Saturday night, getting home runs from Chris Young and Miguel Montero in a 7-1 victory over the Florida Marlins.

Petit (3-3) yielded only two hits to his former team -- a homer by Hanley Ramirez in the fourth inning and a single by John Baker in the sixth.

"He's been very consistent for us," said Arizona Manager Bob Melvin, who also has used Petit as a reliever. "He was on the corners all night. The ball was down. He mixed his pitches."

The Diamondbacks had 12 hits and stretched their division lead to three games over the Dodgers, who lost at Philadelphia.

"We knew coming into the game. We saw that they lost," Diamondbacks first baseman Chad Tracy said. "It makes you want this thing even more."
