Thousands flee tropical storm

August 25, 2008|From Times Wire Reports

Tropical Storm Julio moved over Baja California, prompting more than 2,500 families who live along riverbeds to evacuate.

The center of the storm passed Cabo San Lucas, where many families had moved to shelters, and was hugging the Pacific coast.

Most vacationers rode out the bad weather inside their hotel rooms, but some ventured out on shopping trips and excursions.

"They're very calm," said Jorge Castro, front desk manager at the hillside Hotel Finisterra. The 224 guests were warned to stay away from the ocean, but none made plans to leave early.
