* at Boston 8, Chicago 0: Daisuke Matsuzaka (16-2) yielded two singles in eight innings. His 16 wins tied Hideo Nomo's single-season record for the most by a native of Japan. With Josh Beckett being put on the disabled list, the Red Sox used Matsuzaka in his place against the Central Division leaders, and he pitched one of his most efficient games of the season.

* at Tampa Bay 14, Baltimore 3: Ben Zobrist hit a grand slam, Cliff Floyd drove in five runs and the East-leading Rays (82-51) guaranteed their first-ever winning season. They had never won more than 70 games in a season before this year.

* at New York 2, Toronto 1: The Yankees won for the 18th time this season when scoring three runs or fewer. They were 6-36 in those games last year.

* at Detroit 6, Kansas City 3: The Tigers scored all their runs in the fifth inning. Curtis Granderson's two-run triple and Jeff Larish's two-run single were the key hits.

* Seattle 3, at Cleveland 2: Felix Hernandez posted his first win in six road starts. The Indians were 0 for 9 with runners in scoring position.

* Minnesota 12, at Oakland 2: Joe Mauer matched his career high with five hits and had a season-best four RBIs, and Kevin Slowey won his fourth straight decision.

* at Angels 3, Texas 1: The Angels reduced their magic number for winning the West to 11.
