Lucky us, Brian's back; buzz about 'The Fly'

August 31, 2008|Denise Martin

Hang onto the summer by talking about: Brian Wilson's "That Lucky Old Sun." Sounds like the 66-year-old is channeling his early Beach Boys days in this, his latest solo album celebrating all things SoCal. With songs including "Morning Beat" and "Forever She'll Be My Surfer Girl," his timing couldn't be better. (Tuesday)

"The Fly the Opera" hits L.A. next month. Get ready by talking about: The original 1986 sci-fi masterpiece. Director David Cronenberg and the opera's composer, Howard Shore, will conduct a Q&A before screening a shiny new print of Cronenberg's cult classic at the ArcLight Hollywood. Will the opera be as gloriously gory as the movie? There is no doubt. (Wednesday)

Speaking of creepy, it's time to talk about: "Mister Foe." The movie stars Jamie Bell as Hallam Foe, a teenager whose favorite pastime is voyeurism and who believes his stepmother murdered his real mother. He then falls for a girl who says she's into "creepy guys" and looks a whole lot like his dead mother. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the fall movie season. (Friday)

Just when I thought I was over Tyra, here I am wanting to talk about: "America's Next Top Model." Tyra Banks has gone and roped me in again. Here's how: The first two episodes have what we'll call a space theme. Picture Tyra-bot, Alpha J. and Beta Jay. Picture it for an entire hour. Then add in the show's first transgendered contestant, who, of course, outmodels the girls. Wednesday nights are free no more. (Wednesday)

More people should talk about: "Life." The little-seen NBC police procedural is no "CSI." And that's a good thing. The show revolves around an offbeat cop and technophobe (Damian Lewis) who, after being exonerated of a murder conviction 12 years prior, is out to find the person who framed him. He's a lot less cranky than Grissom. Watch Season 1 on DVD and be convinced. (Tuesday)
