Bengals release Rudi Johnson

August 31, 2008|From the Associated Press

Running back Rudi Johnson and offensive tackle Willie Anderson were released by the Cincinnati Bengals on Saturday as part of their moves to get to the 53-man roster limit.

Johnson, who ran for a club-record 1,458 yards in 2005, missed most of camp because of a hamstring injury. Chris Perry, a first-round pick in 2004, will move into the starting job.

Anderson was the longest tenured Bengal, having played 12 seasons in Cincinnati.

Jeff Rowe was waived, leaving Jordan Palmer -- the younger brother of starter Carson Palmer -- as the No. 3 quarterback.

Coach Ken Whisenhunt said that Kurt Warner would be the starter over Matt Leinart when the Arizona Cardinals open their season next week against the 49ers at San Francisco.
