Two killed in separate accidents on 210 Freeway

One victim might have jumped from an overpass. The other might have been in a rear-end collision.

Two unrelated fatal traffic accidents occurred within a few miles of each other early today on the 210 Freeway in Claremont, including one that may have involved a suicide, authorities said.

An unidentified male in his mid-30s was reportedly struck by at least one vehicle about 6 a.m. on the eastbound 210 at North Towne Avenue. The California Highway Patrol received initial calls about the incident that suggested the victim may have jumped from an overpass.

"They're trying to determine whether, if he did jump, he was hit subsequently after that or whether he was [walking] on the freeway and got hit," said CHP Officer Francisco Villalobos.

Villalobos said the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Less than an hour after that incident, a collision involving a big-rig truck and two other vehicles occurred on the eastbound 210, just west of North Towne. An unidentified 50-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The cause may have been a rear-end collision, although it is still under investigation, authorities said.
