Police have arrested and charged James Fayed, who ran an international gold trading company, with capital murder for allegedly paying the manager of his Moorpark ranch $25,000 to help arrange the July 28 slaying of Fayed's wife, Pamela, with whom he was embroiled in bitter divorce proceedings.
Authorities believe that Jose Luis Moya, the ranch manager, knew the killer and recruited him for the attack. Moya also faces murder and conspiracy charges.
Los Angeles Police Det. Salaam Abdul said footage from a video surveillance camera in the parking garage shows the assailant getting out of the back of a rented red Suzuki sport utility vehicle and struggling at a control panel to move the arm of a parking barrier so he can exit.
Moya allegedly accompanied the killer and was seated in the vehicle's passenger seat at the time, authorities said. Based on the video, investigators described the suspect as about 5 feet 10 to 6 feet 1 and 160 to 180 pounds.
Battling tears, Desiree Goudie, Pamela Fayed's 19-year-old daughter, appealed Tuesday for the public's help in apprehending the suspect.
"I would like to ask anyone who has any information regarding this to please just help us out, help me and my family out and find out why he did this to my mom," she said, before breaking into sobs at a news conference outside the LAPD's Parker Center headquarters. "Anything will help, please."
"This murder was a huge tragedy for our family," said Scott Goudie, Pamela's brother, who also attended the news conference. "It's left a void that we'll never be able to fill. We believe that this person is out there. We think somebody knows who they are. We are pleading with anyone who could have any possible information to step forward and call the police."
Pamela Fayed, 44, had just met with her lawyer at his Century City office and was returning to her car in the high-rise parking garage when she was attacked, authorities said. James Fayed also was at the law office.
A sketch of the suspect, who is shown with a shaved head and goatee, has been compared with photos of known gang members in the Oxnard and Ventura areas but so far has not produced any results, Abdul said. Fingerprints obtained from the crime scene and the vehicle also have not yielded an identity.
