Hundreds of firefighters battled a blaze this morning at an electronics warehouse in downtown Los Angeles that sent smoke into the sky and backed up traffic on nearby freeways, officials said.
The fire was reported at 4:33 a.m. at Yoni Distributors, 953 E. 11th St., where several other electronics wholesalers are located. When firefighters arrived, heavy smoke was billowing from the roof of the building, said Melissa Kelley, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Fire Department.
A section of the roof collapsed within an hour, Kelley said, and firefighters were forced to battle the flames from outside the one-story building for about 30 minutes with only ladder hoses.
The fire was knocked out about 6:18 a.m., and no injuries were reported, she said. About 150 firefighters helped keep the flames from spreading to neighboring buildings.
An investigation will begin today to determine the cause of the fire, said Ron Myers, a spokesman for the department.
