Meredith Artley, executive editor of latimes.com, said one of Stanton's strengths "is that he understands the urgency of the situation we're in."

Stanton left the business editor job at the Orange County Register in 1997 to join The Times as a reporter in Orange County. He was appointed business editor in 2005 and a year ago filled the newly created post of innovation editor.

In that position, he oversaw the online news report and started to integrate The Times' print newsroom with its Web operation. He said in his remarks to the staff that people on the print and online sides of the paper "need to better understand and work with each other."

The son of a homemaker and an accountant, Stanton grew up in Tulare in the San Joaquin Valley, working on student newspapers from junior high school through college. Before joining The Times, he worked at the Orange County Register, the Riverside Press-Enterprise and the San Bernardino County Sun. He began his career as a business reporter at the Visalia Times-Delta. He is a fervent Dodgers fan.

On the business side, Hiller said that Dave Murphy, general manager and head of advertising, was leaving the paper. Hiller said a national search was underway for a new advertising director.

Hiller also named longtime circulation chief Jack Klunder to the newly created position of president, with responsibility for the core print business. Bob Bellack, who was chief financial officer, became president of online media, classified advertising and development. John O'Laughlin, head of marketing for the Los Angeles Times Media Group, became president of targeted media as well, responsible for Hoy and other publications.

Rob Barrett, general manager of latimes.com, was named senior vice president of interactive. Chris Avetisian, currently director of financial planning, succeeded Bellack as chief financial officer, and Gwen Murakami filled the newly created position of senior vice president of administration.
