Waves will introduce 62-year-old Asbury as its coach at a 1 p.m. news conference Tuesday.
Pepperdine will introduce Tom Asbury as its coach at a 1 p.m. news conference Tuesday. Asbury, 62, had been finalizing negotiations to take the job. Meanwhile, Utah assistant coach Marty Wilson told the Salt Lake Tribune he will soon meet with Asbury about becoming his likely successor at the Malibu school whenever he retires.
Wilson, a former Pepperdine player and assistant, was briefly the interim coach at the school at 28 during the 1995-96 season after Tony Fuller resigned.
“The thought process is to possibly get me back as [Asbury’s] top assistant and to quote-unquote groom me to be the next head coach there,” Wilson told the newspaper. “That’s the plan.”
Asbury said earlier a succession plan would be the idea, though he did not expect the school to sign a formal succession contract.
The plan is for Eric Bridgeland, the interim coach after the resignation of Vance Walberg, to finish the season before Asbury takes over.
