Nancy Reagan back home after hospital stay

Former First Lady Nancy Reagan was back home in Bel-Air today after a two-day hospital stay following a fall, a family spokeswoman said.

Reagan took a spill at home on Sunday morning and was taken to St. John’s Health Center in Santa Monica.

She went in really shaky – anybody that would have a fall would be really shaky,” said family spokeswoman Joanne Drake. Drake said the cause of the fall is still being determined.

The 86-year-old did not break any bones, and extensive medical tests all produced negative results, Drake said. Reagan coincidentally stayed in the same room where President Ronald Reagan had recuperated from a broken hip in 2001.

The former first lady returned home today and is “just taking a lot of phone calls from friends,” Drake said. About 5,000 visitors to the Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley on Monday wrote her cards and messages, and her house is full of flowers, Drake said. “She’s just really thrilled to be home.”

Reagan last appeared in public at a speaking event with NBC news anchor Brian Williams at the presidential library Feb. 8, Drake said. Before that, she attended the Republican presidential debate held there Jan. 30.

Nancy Reagan, born Anne Frances Robbins, was married to President Ronald Reagan for 52 years. She is known for championing the “Just Say No” campaign against alcohol and drugs while Reagan was in office from 1981 to 1989. She cared for the former president in his later years as he struggled with Alzheimer’s disease until his death in 2004.

She continues to work at the Reagan Presidential Library.
