Steven’s Being looks to repeat
He will run in the seventh race at Santa Anita and try to improve to two for two on two-turn races over turf.
A winner in his first two-turn race over turf, Steven’s Being will be looking for a repeat in the seventh race Wednesday at Santa Anita.
Trained by Neil Drysdale for owner-breeder Gary Seidler, the 5-year-old Fusaichi Pegasus gelding will have only five opponents in the $57,000 optional claimer for California breds at 1 1/8 miles on grass.
After spending more than six months on the sidelines in 2007, Steven’s Being returned with a fourth-place finish in a main track sprint Dec. 28 before stretching out and winning at a mile Jan. 19.
In a race marred by a spill in which jockey Agapito Delgadillo suffered a fractured collarbone, Steven’s Being won by three-quarters of a length.
A last-place finisher in his only previous turf race – in his career debut Oct. 28, 2006 – Steven’s Being will have jockey Rafael Bejarano aboard for the first time.
The rest of the field is Cinder Cone, Super Harmony, General Bueno, Unusual Treasure and Brian The Bold. General Bueno, a 5-year-old General Meeting gelding, is the only entrant without a win on turf. He will be making his first start for trainer Mike Pender after being claimed for $25,000 on Dec. 22.
Besides Steven’s Being, Cinder Cone is the only horse to have won on the grass in Arcadia. Trained by Howard Zucker, who also conditions Unusual Treasure, Cinder Cone defeated maidens over the Santa Anita turf April 5.
Race of the day: Sporting Art, who won two of three on turf in England last year, will make his U.S. debut in the eighth race at Gulfstream Park. Javier Castellano will ride the 3-year-old Doneraile Court colt for owner Godolphin Racing LLC and trainer Christophe Clement in the $43,500 allowance at 1 1/16 miles.
One for the road: A Wee Gift won in her debut Jan. 20 and might be able to come right back on a new surface in the eighth race at Tampa Bay Downs. Willie Martinez will ride the 3-year-old Jambalaya Jazz for owners Jane Brooks and Beth McDaniel and trainer Joan Scott in the $20,200 allowance at one mile on the turf.
Exotically speaking: An early pick four using Zee Topper and Whatwerewethinking in the first, Carman and All Money No Love in the second, Band Of Thunder, Tox Dee Bee and Quinton’s Fleet in the third and Clear The Hall and Drewismyson in the fourth.
Winners: (previous day/meet total): 2/75. Money:(previous day/meet total: $12.80/$501.20. Total money bet: $580.
