New York’s “The Gates,” a public art project 26 years in the making, was nothing if not controversial when it debuted in 2005. “The Gates” traces the history of artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude and the meaning behind the more than 7,500 fabric-paneled gates that dotted a wintry Central Park with orange.
