A self-proclaimed white supremacist who attacked an African American security guard outside a restaurant at the Irvine Spectrum has been convicted of a hate crime, authorities said Tuesday.

Ryan Lawrence Monfils, 20, was sentenced to six months in jail, three years of formal probation and banned from the Irvine Spectrum after pleading guilty to one felony count of hate-crime battery.

Monfils, of Stanton, was leaving Dave & Buster's, a restaurant at the Spectrum, when he yelled racial slurs, repeated punched the uniformed guard and threw a lighted cigarette in his face about 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 2.

He was arrested 17 days later at a McDonald's restaurant in Orange where he worked as a cashier.
