Plaschke, Simers honored

The Times' Bill Plaschke and T.J. Simers were selected among the top 10 columnists in the over-250,000 circulation division in the Associated Press Sports Editors' writing and section contests that ended Wednesday in Orlando, Fla.

Other newspapers in the largest-circulation division represented by two columnists were the Washington Post and Kansas City Star.

The Times' Kevin Baxter was among the top 10 for explanatory reporting for his story on the defections of Cuban baseball players. Ed Hinton, who last year covered auto racing for Tribune newspapers, including The Times, was honored for features and explanatory reporting.

The Times was selected among the top 10 daily sports sections and received honorable mention for Sunday and special sections. The Kansas City Star was the only sports section in the division selected among the top 10 in all three categories.

Among others honored:

Daily News, honorable mention Sunday sections, 100,000-250,000 division.

Scott Reid, Orange County Register, project reporting, over-250,000.

Matt Calkins, Riverside Press-Enterprise, columns, 100,000-250,000.

Jeff Eisenberg, Riverside Press-Enterprise, projects, 100,000-250,000.

Elliott Teaford, South Bay Daily Breeze, game stories, 40,000-100,000.
