Sinister Forces At Play

January 03, 2008

Historian and writer Alan K. Rode has been programming some of the best, rarely seen noirs as Sunday matinees at the Silent Movie Theatre in L.A. His latest effort, "Black & White & Red: Blacklisted Noir," features classics directed, produced, written by or starring those singled out by the House Un-American Activities Committee. The two-month festival opens with 1948's "Force of Evil," written and directed by the blacklisted Abraham Polonsky (pictured on the set, right) and starring the blacklisted John Garfield (center, with Beatrice Pearson). Says Rode: "There is nothing more noir than the blacklist." 1 p.m Sun. $10. www.silentmovietheatre.com
