The strengths of outdoor gyms

January 06, 2008

Re "Outdoor gyms aim to reduce health woes," Dec. 28

Los Angeles County is heading in the right direction by installing outdoor fitness centers at some parks. Because the centers are too costly to put in all parks, the county ought to consider the outdoor gymnastic apparatus that the city of Los Angeles has had in most of its parks for 60 years. They are much cheaper, require less maintenance and are used by many adults to develop a high level of fitness or learn and maintain basic gymnastic skills.

Unfortunately, the city hasn't installed any in more than 40 years. It doesn't seem to realize how its parks have stood out above other cities in its support of adult fitness.
