Sweeter Still the one to beat in $100,000 Flawlessly
The Hollywood Park race on Friday has 12 3-year-olds who aren’t quite ready for the Grade I American Oaks being run on Saturday.
The proper name for the ungraded race being run at Hollywood Park on Friday is the $100,000 Flawlessly.
What it should be called is the American Oaks Consolation.
A full field of 12 3-year-old fillies not quite ready for the Oaks, a Grade I that will be run on Saturday, will get together in the Flawlessly at one mile on the turf.
Sweeter Still, a daughter of Rock Of Gibraltar, is probably the one to defeat. She found 1 1/8 miles a bit too long when third in the Honeymoon Handicap on June 7, a reason why she wasn’t pointed to the Oaks, which is run at 1 1/4 miles.
Owned by David J. Lanzman Racing Stables, Inc. and trained by Jeff Mullins, Sweeter Still will be looking for her third win in five tries at the Flawlessly distance. The Irish bred will again be ridden by Martin Garcia.
Mullins is also scheduled to run two others – Final Fling and Runforthemoneybaby.
A daughter of Bertrando owned by Michael House, Final Fling will be making her turf debut while Runforthemoneybaby, an Unusual Heat filly, will be looking for her first win on the surface in her third grass appearance.
Other contenders in the field include Lethal Heat, who has won four of five for trainer Barry Abrams, including a pair of wins on turf, Starry Pursuit and Ginger Pop.
Race of the day: Lucky Island, who has won three in a row and four of five overall, will try to continue the hot streak in the $200,000 Tom Fool Handicap on Friday at Belmont Park. Alan Garcia will ride the 4-year-old son of Lucky Roberto for Shadwell Stable and trainer Kiaran McLaughlin in the Grade II at seven furlongs. Five others are scheduled to participate in a race that is part of a pick six with a carry-over of $190,641.
One for the road: Spy Park makes his second start for a stable that excels with such runners in the 11th race on Friday at Churchill Downs. Shaun Bridgmohan has the mount on the 3-year-old Golden Missile colt for Silverton Hill LLC and trainer Darrin Miller in the $41,400 maiden race at seven furlongs. Spy Park ran third in his debut at 5-2 and Miller, according to statistics in the Daily Racing Form, has won at a 47% clip with his last 19 second-time starters.
Exotically speaking: An early pick four using Jazzerin and Smooch in the first, Salah Mrs. D in the second, Tizsong, Quarter Moon and Bringbackabillion in the third and Gary’s Got Rhythm, Mananan McLir and Norway House in the fourth.
Winners (through Wednesday): (previous day/meet total): 3/128. Money (previous day/meet total): $23.40/$758.20. Total money bet: $884.
