For the record

Big Sur fire: A map with an article in Monday's Section A about the Basin Complex fire, as well as maps of the fire in other recent editions, showed Big Sur's Nepenthe Restaurant on the east side of Highway 1. It is on the west side of the highway.

Handgun ban -- An article in Saturday's Section A on District of Columbia residents interested in legally purchasing handguns referred to a federal ban on the transport of firearms across state lines. In fact, the ban prohibits the purchase of a handgun in a state in which the buyer is not a resident unless the weapon is transferred for pickup to a federally licensed firearms dealer in the buyer's home state.

UCLA film school: The Scriptland column in the July 1 Calendar section about Richard Walter, chair of UCLA's screenwriting program, identified UCLA donors David Geffen, Barbra Streisand, Jerry Lewis and Jane and Terry Semel as alumni of the university. In fact, Walter referred to them as prominent entertainment industry figures, not as UCLA alumni. None of them graduated from UCLA.

Helms obituary: The obituary of former North Carolina Sen. Jesse Helms in Sunday's Section A said he was the only senator to vote against making the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday a national holiday. The Senate vote on the bill was 78-22.

Ringo Starr's band: A story in Monday's Calendar about Ringo Starr's All-Starr Band stated that Rockpile guitarist Billy Bremner is part of the group, along with Billy Squier, Colin Hay, Hamish Stuart and Gary Wright. Bremner is not on this tour of Starr's band.

South Los Angeles: A photo caption with an article in Monday's California section about the area formerly called South Central L.A. said a mural depicting the neighborhood's once-thriving jazz scene was at 25th Street and Adams Boulevard. The mural is at 25th Street and Central Avenue.

Traffic court: An article in Saturday's California section about traffic courts incorrectly described a stop sign as hexagonal in shape. Stop signs are octagonal.

Rock Band: The Game Day column in the June 26 Calendar said that the Rock Band video game for the Wii platform sold for $159.99. The price is $169.99.

Country singer: A caption with Sunday's Hot Property column in the Real Estate section incorrectly spelled Trisha Yearwood's first name as Tricia.

Webern composition: An article in Sunday's Arts & Music section about conductors Bramwell Tovey and Thomas Wilkins misspelled composer Anton Webern's "Im Sommerwind" as "Im Sommerwin."
