EDITORS' PICKS

CROWD-PLEASERS: The World Famous Lipizzaner Stallions 38th Anniversary Tour prances into Staples Center for two spectacular equine ballet displays. In Los Angeles for the first time in 20 years, the graceful white steeds -- whose lineage dates to the 16th century and who nearly perished during World War II (only to be famously rescued by U.S. troops in a mission ordered by Gen. George S. Patton) -- kick up their hooves in an equestrian showcase that will wow family audiences with an electrifying array of leaps, bounds and daredevil maneuvers. 2 and 7:30 p.m. Sat., Staples Center. $35-$100. FUTURISTIC RETROSPECTIVE

A starchitect before the term was even invented, John Lautner designed such recognizable structures as the Chemosphere, the Elrod Residence in Palm Springs, left, and Marbrisa in Acapulco. Starting Sunday, the Hammer Museum pays tribute to Lautner in the first major retrospective of his work. The show includes large-scale models, photographs as well as tours of Lautner's L.A. buildings. "Between Earth and Heaven: The Architecture of John Lautner," opens Sun., Hammer Museum. $3-$5 (not including tours). www.hammer.ucla.edu

THRILLIN' AND GRILLIN'

Like its array of deep-fried foods -- frog legs for the gourmand, Spam for the average Joe, Twinkies and Snickers for the sugar addict -- the Orange County Fair offers something for everyone. The musical palette features the likes of Tom Jones, Pat Benatar, the Scorpions, Emmylou Harris and Paramore; events include pig races, a demolition derby, a cattle drive and the world's largest barbecue (made from a converted oil tanker). Opens Fri.; runs Tue.-Sun. through Aug. 3, 88 Fair Drive, Costa Mesa. $9-$5. (714) 708-3247; www.ocfair.com

'SGT. PEPPER' REVISITED

Combining revolutionary songs and recording techniques within a clever conceptual package, "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" remade the album as art. In this joint reception and multimedia presentation, the producer, George Martin, guides visitors through the recording process with archival footage and video appearances from Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and Phil Collins. 7 p.m. Fri., USC Bovard Auditorium. $50-$100. www.grammy.com
