LAPD arrests alleged tagger, 16, in shooting death at Windsor Park

The suspect was identified by witnesses to the shooting death near Los Angeles High School that occurred among a crowd of youths gathered for a fight between tagging crews, police say.

Los Angeles police have arrested a 16-year-old alleged tagger in connection with the shooting death this week of another 16-year-old boy near Los Angeles High School.

The suspect, whose name was not released because of his age, was arrested after witnesses identified him Wednesday, Los Angeles Police Department officials said today in a statement.

The suspect had apparently been among a crowd of youths gathered at Windsor Park near Olympic and Plymouth boulevards Tuesday afternoon for a fight between two tagging crews, according to the statement. Some members of the crowd had video cameras to film the fight, and investigators are still attempting to obtain footage, police said.

During the gathering, which involved students from nearby Los Angeles High School and neighborhood youths, a fight broke out and escalated until the suspect pulled a handgun and fired a shot into the crowd, striking the victim in the chest, police said.

They could not say whether the two 16-year-olds were students at L.A. High.

The victim, whose name has not been released, was taken to a local hospital, where he later died, police said.

The suspect was being held without bail.
