When, where: Aug. 7 to 13; events at sites on the North and West shores of Lake Tahoe; Concours d'Elegance and VIP Preview Day at Sierra Boat Co., 5146 N. Lake Blvd., Carnelian Bay.

Highlights: Classic wooden vessels on display; highlight is the Concours d'Elegance competition. Boats are judged in various classes on wood craftsmanship, finish and detailing.

Cost: VIP Preview Day of boats in competition, Aug. 7, $100; Concours d'Elegance, Aug. 8 and 9, $30 one-day ticket, $35 two-day ticket if purchased in advance. 11 and younger admitted free.

CARMEL Jazz at the Plaza

Highlights: This marks the third year of free music on Carmel Plaza; in addition, wine and cheese tasting.

Cost: Admission free; wine and cheese, $15 per person. Tickets may be purchased only on the day of the event.

OLYMPIC VALLEY Poetry readings, writing workshops

When, where: Thursday and Aug. 2 to 9 at Squaw Valley USA, 1960 Squaw Valley Road.

Highlights: "Extraordinary Evening" of poetry readings with Lucille Clifton, Robert Hass, Sharon Olds, C.D. Wright and Dean Young reading from published and unpublished work, including poems written in Squaw Valley; in August, writing workshops in fiction, nonfiction.

Cost: Workshops are mostly free; poetry readings have a suggested donation of $10 per adult.
