Night Lines

June 05, 2008|Charlie Amter

With Gay Pride descending upon West Hollywood this weekend, several bars and restaurants in the area are gearing up for a string of very busy nights. One storied WeHo favorite that's ready for its close-up is Numbers. Dating back some 30 years (first on Sunset Boulevard at the Hyde location, but now at 8741 Santa Monica Blvd. at Hancock Avenue), the nightspot fell into ill-repute in the 1970s and '80s. "It had a reputation around the world as a hustler bar," says new co-owner Chad Patterson (pictured at right). Nearly two months ago, Patterson and former "Queer Eye for the Straight Girl" designer Damon Pease (left in photo) bought the space (which had a brief stint as Digits recently) and changed the name back to Numbers in an attempt to restore the bar to its former glory. "What I've done is gone back and embraced the history of the place," says Patterson of Pease's redesign. "We've redone the bathrooms, added a chandelier and see-through side dividers to each booth." Starting this weekend, the show goes on: Numbers will be open until 2 a.m. nightly, and look for a massive man-laden float from the bar-restaurant in WeHo's parade Sunday (which can also be streamed live on the Web at lapride.org/webcast) . . . . Another WeHo favorite, Ultra Suede, recently underwent a minor revamp: Leather seating and new wallpaper were added to the large club, just in time for the launch of its new well-attended weekly dance party, Cherry Pop (expect it to be packed this Saturday) . . . . In non-WeHo news, Avalon's Spider Club will undergo a major face-lift this fall, owners say. More details of the overhaul soon.
