1-year-old boy bitten by pit bull in Pacoima

The child is in critical condition after being bitten on the cheek by a family dog.

A one-year-old boy was in critical condition today in Childrens Hospital Los Angeles after he was bitten by a pit bull in Pacoima, officials said.

Los Angeles firefighters responded to 13000 block of Louvre Street at 11:06 a.m., said d'Lisa Davies, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Fire Department. The boy's mother called 911 after at least one of the family's two pit bulls bit her son on the cheek, said Los Angeles Police Department Sgt. Rudy Alaniz.

Firefighters used an extinguisher to spray the dog so that paramedics could reach the child and treat him, Alaniz said. The boy was airlifted by a helicopter from nearby Paxton Park, Davies said. After the attack, the dogs were in the home's front yard and animal control officials were en route to the scene early this afternoon, Davies said.

Davies said because the boy was so young every effort was made to get him to a hospital "as quickly as possible."
