June 29, 2008|Deborah Schoch

Two men were shot in the lower torso in a drive-by attack in Long Beach early Saturday, and one of the men died at a local hospital, a police spokeswoman said.

The shooting occurred about 2 a.m. in a largely residential neighborhood near Linden Avenue and 14th Street in the city's central area, said Officer Jacki Bezart.

Police officers who responded to a report of gunfire said the shots were fired from a vehicle that approached a group of people standing in the area, Bezart said.

The second man remained hospitalized, she said.

An investigation is underway, and police Saturday night had not released the identities of the two men or a description of the vehicle.

The second man who was shot did not suffer life-threatening injuries, police said.
