Injury sidelines Jeff Kent

SPRING REPORT / NEW YORK METS 3, DODGERS 2

He'll be out for at least a week. Dodgers lose by a 3-2 margin after N.Y.'s Anderson Hernandez singles home Gregory Veloz in the bottom of the ninth.

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Five sprints into his pregame warmup today, Jeff Kent felt a twinge in one of his hamstrings.

Kent, who turns 40 on Friday, was sent back from Tradition Field to Dodgertown and underwent an examination that determined he would be sidelined for at least a week.

"Bad luck," Manager Joe Torre said.

The Dodgers also lost the game by a 3-2 margin to the New York Mets, falling when Anderson Hernandez singled home Gregory Veloz in the bottom of the ninth.

Brad Penny, in line to be the Dodgers' opening-day starter, pitched the first three innings, giving up one run and three hits while walking three.

"I'm not letting go yet," said Penny, who revealed that he mostly threw fastballs. "I'm trying to go out there to get pitches in and not worry about the results."

Chan Ho Park, who will start for the Dodgers against the San Diego Padres in Major League Baseball's first game in China on March 15, pitched two scoreless innings and struck out two.

Mike Myers, a left-handed non-roster invitee, pitched his third scoreless inning in a row to bolster his case to be the Dodgers' second left-hander out of the bullpen.

Jason Repko and George Lombard were both two for two with a run batted in and catcher Gary Bennett was one for two with a double and run scored.

Back in Dodgertown, closer Takashi Saito, who is recovering from a right calf strain, played catch with Rick Honeycutt and threw light 12 pitches off a mound. "If the pain is at that level, it's absolutely no problem," Saito said.

Left-hander Hong-Chih Kuo said that the irritation in his elbow had subsided and that he planned to test it by throwing Thursday.
