Established in 1884, Baker is a classic example of what designers call "transitional." The term describes tailored furniture that places nicely with antiques as well as contemporary pieces. Baker's newest retail showroom in Los Angeles -- dazzlingly illuminated with fixtures including the 12-arm gilt and cut-glass Metal Corset chandelier, $3,120, shown below -- features collections by stars including Barbara Barry, Bill Sofield and Hotel Costes designer Jacques Garcia that update traditional silhouettes for modern sensibilities. The store also carries outdoor seating, the McGuire rattan line, cloisonne and hammered-copper pieces that were designed by Los Angeles designer Robert Kuo and the firm's signature period reproduction lines.
