Brother Derek scratched from return engagement

The 2006 Santa Anita Derby winner, who hasn’t raced in more than a year, will not be in seventh race at Santa Anita because of a problem with his right front hoof.

Those longing for the return of Brother Derek, the toast of California’s 3-year-olds in the early part of 2006, will have to wait for another day.

The son of Benchmark, who is owned by Cecil Peacock and trained by Dan Hendricks, was scratched from his return engagement in Friday’s seventh race at Santa Anita because of a problem with his right front hoof.

It should only cost him four or five days and he will be fine,” Hendricks said of the 2006 Santa Anita Derby winner, who hasn’t raced since finishing third in the Strub on Feb. 3, 2007.

One horse who will make a comeback in the $68,000 allowance at one mile is Trotamondo.

A 7-year-old Chilean-bred son of Hussonet, Trotamondo will be making his first start for trainer Ron McAnally and his first since he finished fifth in an optional claimer Nov. 19, 2006, at Hollywood Park. A multiple Group 1 winner in his native country, Trotamondo’s only U.S. win came in the 2005 Native Diver Handicap in Inglewood.

Completing the field are Mast Track, Sadler’s Trick, Fly Dorcego, Sahara Heat, Augment, Double Galore, Capitano and Gotaghostofachance.

Race of the day: Miss Buddhafull, a big winner in her first after a claim, returns at the same level in search of a repeat in the eighth race at Aqueduct. Channing Hill will ride the 4-year-old daughter of Buddha for owner Charles Petigrow and trainer Gary Contessa in the $53,000 optional claimer at one mile and 70 yards. The victory March 6 was the second in five starts over the inner track for Miss Buddhafull, who will have only four opponents on what could be a sloppy track in New York.

One for the road: Castle Rose gets a positive post change and can graduate in her third lifetime start in the fifth race at Gulfstream Park. Jorge Chavez has the mount on the 4-year-old Awesome Again filly for owner-breeder Frank Stronach and trainer Brian Lynch in the $80,000 maiden claimer at one mile on the turf. When second in her last race Feb. 28, Castle Rose finished directly in front of next-out winner Hollywood Classic.

Exotically speaking: A pick three using Seismometer and Deb’s Mojo in the first, Quasimodo, Si Chimi and Count Orange in the second and Foreign, Dandy Mandy and Soothing Touch in the third.

Winners: (previous day/meet total): 2/146. Money(previous day/meet total): $8.80/$923.40. Total money bet: $1,058.
