Manchester United maintains control

Cristiano Ronaldo scores first and Rooney scores twice in a 4-0 victory over Aston Villa.
Not even heavy rain could stop Manchester United's march toward the English Premier League title Saturday as Alex Ferguson's squad rolled over Aston Villa, 4-0, at Old Trafford to open a six-point, or two-game, lead atop the standings with six games to play.

It was the usual suspects who provided the goals -- the opener coming from Cristiano Ronaldo (who had missed Portugal's midweek game because of "injury"), the second was courtesy of a header by Carlos Tevez, and then Wayne Rooney scored two more in the second half.
Ronaldo's goal was his 35th of the season in all competitions, and if the team goes all the way to the European Champions League final in Moscow in May, the Portuguese winger could catch or overtake Denis Law as Manchester United's all-time season scoring leader.
The former Scotland great holds the mark with 46 goals.

It was not a good week for goalkeeper Artur Boruc.
On Wednesday, Boruc was in the nets for Poland in Krakow as the U.S. put three goals past him off set pieces, courtesy of Carlos Bocanegra, Oguchi Onyewu and Eddie Lewis.
On Saturday, Boruc again came up short when Rangers edged Celtic, 1-0, in the latest installment of Scotland's "Old Firm" rivalry. This time it was Kevin Thompson who did the damage, scoring just before halftime with his first goal for Rangers.
Rangers lead Celtic by six points in the Scottish Premier League and also have played one fewer game. With eight games to go, the teams still have to play each other twice on Celtic's home ground, so the race is not quite over yet.
Four players from Rangers who had skipped Scotland's come-from-behind 1-1 tie with Croatia on Wednesday returned to play Saturday, raising questions about just how injured they really were.
------
For Lewis, the week was up and down. He scored against Poland, but Saturday his club, Derby County was assured of relegation from the English Premier League when it managed only a 2-2 tie with Fulham.
Chances are Lewis and American teammate Benny Feilhaber, both former UCLA players, will be moving on rather than playing in a lower league. The tie also left Fulham's Premier League survival prospects looking grim.

Former FC Porto and Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho reacted furiously Saturday to reports linking him to Inter Milan and denied that he had traveled to Italy to meet with club officials.
