Guzman’s big day leads Nationals past Pirates

* at Washington 9, Pittsburgh 8: Cristian Guzman tied a career high with six runs batted in, including a tiebreaking, three-run double in the sixth inning, to lead the Nationals. He also had six RBIs on June 24, 2001, for the Minnesota Twins against the Detroit Tigers.

* at Houston 6, Milwaukee 2: Pitcher Brandon Backe and Michael Bourn hit back-to-back home runs during a five-run fifth inning. It was the first time since 2001 the Astros have had two straight games with consecutive home runs after hitting three home runs in a row in the series opener Friday night.

* San Diego 7, at Florida 2: Jake Peavy yielded two runs and five hits and struck out eight in 5 2/3 innings. It was the 2007 National League Cy Young Award winner’s first win since April 11. He was replaced after walking Luis Gonzalez with two out in the sixth, having thrown 112 pitches. “I do what I’m told,” Peavy said. “When the manager takes the ball from you after 5 2/3 you are not happy … that’s all there is to it.”

* Chicago 9, at St. Louis 3: Mike Fontenot hit a three-run homer and had a career-best four RBIs, and the Cubs won for only the third time in nine games. Geovany Soto had a two-run double in a six-run fourth.

* San Francisco 3, at Philadelphia 2 (10 innings): Bengie Molina singled in the go-ahead run in the 10th. Randy Winn singled with one out off Rudy Seanez. After Winn stole second, Molina lined a 3-1 pitch to left.

* at Atlanta 9, Cincinnati 1: Jo-Jo Reyes gave up one run in 5 1/3 innings and the Braves broke open a close game with a six-run seventh. Reyes was recalled from triple-A Richmond to start in place of the injured John Smoltz

* at Arizona 10, New York 4: Brandon Webb became the majors’ first seven-game winner.

* Dodgers 12, at Colorado 7: James Loney homered and drove in six runs.
