Rubber ducks float home to Huntington Beach
DUCK!
When the ocean around Huntington Beach Pier turns bright yellow this weekend, don’t worry: It’s only the 16th Annual Duck-a-thon. The charitable event peaks when 4,000 rubber ducks are poured over the edge of the pier for a whimsical race to the shore. “That cloud of yellow ducks landing in the surf is an amazing sight,” says event coordinator Carol Speaker. On Saturday, the first 60 hand-numbered ducks to reach the beach net their sponsors valuable prizes. On Sunday, the corporate-sponsored “big mama ducks” race to shore from the “duckmobile” to claim the “Golden Duck” trophy. 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Sat.; 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sun. (Races at 3 p.m. both days.) $10 yellow rubber ducks; $20 buccaneer ducks. (714) 536-6712; www.duck-a-thon.org.
