Orange County janitors would receive wage and benefit improvements under a tentative agreement reached late Thursday with cleaning contractors and building owners.
The proposed four-year contract will be added to a separate agreement reached Monday by Los Angeles County janitors, forming a joint pact that union members are scheduled to vote on today.
If ratified, it would be the first time that janitors in both counties would operate under the same contract, said Mike Garcia, president of Service Employees International Union Local 1877.
About 8,000 janitors are represented by Local 1877 in the two-county region; 6,700 would be covered under the proposed contract. The janitors work primarily in commercial office buildings.
