Two students injured in chemistry class blast

Two students conducting an experiment in chemistry class were injured today when their mixture of potassium chloride and sugar exploded.

The two students at Huntington Park College Ready Academy High School suffered second-degree burns in the small blast about 1 p.m., said Los Angeles County Fire Inspector Darryl Jacobs.

The two were taken to a hospital and their classroom was evacuated for about 45 minutes while officials cleared the area and made sure it was safe, Jacobs said.

He said the students' chemistry teacher was present when "something went wrong" with the experiment.
