Julie White's reprise of her Tony Award-winning performance in "The Little Dog Laughed," the latest work by hip-hop performer Danny Hoch, an Iraq War-themed play and an exploration of evangelism in America are among the offerings planned for Center Theatre Group's 2008-09 season at the Kirk Douglas Theatre in Culver City.
The season opens with the West Coast premiere of "This Beautiful City" (Sept. 28-Oct. 26), from Obie Award-winning troupe the Civilians, based on interviews with church members and others in the Rocky Mountain "epicenter" of America's evangelical movement. Written by troupe founder Steven Cosson and Jim Lewis, it features music and lyrics by Michael Friedman, whose "Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson" was seen at the Douglas last year.
Douglas Carter Beane's satiric farce, "The Little Dog Laughed," opened on Broadway in 2006. The play, starring White as a manipulative Hollywood agent, runs Nov. 23-Dec. 21.
The new year opens with "Taking Over," Hoch's newest solo show, a look at the effects of gentrification on American cities (Jan. 23-Feb. 22). Hoch staged and co-created "Flow," which was part of UCLA Live's International Theatre Festival in 2004.
