Sprint sued over termination fees

November 05, 2008|Times Wire Services

Wireless communications company Sprint Nextel Corp., which had been ordered to pay $73 million to mobile-phone customers in a California lawsuit over termination fees, was sued in federal court over the charges in a new complaint seeking as much as $1.2 billion.

Four Sprint customers said in a complaint filed Oct. 29 in San Francisco that the fees of as much as $200 are illegal because they aren't tied to actual costs associated with early terminations, as required by law.

"The ruling on which the plaintiffs' attorney bases his current lawsuit is only preliminary," said Matt Sullivan, a Sprint spokesman. "We view this latest lawsuit as cynical and opportunistic."
