U.N. envoy says civilians executed

November 09, 2008|Times Wire Services

Rebels and pro-government militiamen executed civilians last week in two waves of violence.

A U.N. envoy to Congo, Alan Doss, said "war crimes that we cannot tolerate" were committed by rebel leader Laurent Nkunda's fighters and by Mai Mai militiamen.

Meanwhile, Congo's army advanced toward rebel lines, with renewed fighting near the city of Goma threatening a fragile cease-fire.
