Re "The world? Obama," Opinion, Nov. 6

Shortly after the election of President-elect Barack Obama, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev threatened to base missiles along the Polish border, in a throwback to the Cold War, and the Israelis warned that opening talks with Iran could be viewed as a sign of weakness in the Middle East.

And Rosa Brooks wrote in The Times that "world leaders likely will be eager to extend to America the hand of friendship."

Wrong again, Rosa.
