Sylmar brush fire burns 20 acres

One structure may be involved, officials say. City firefighters and crews from Angeles National Forest are responding to blaze.

A brush fire fanned by high winds sparked up to 20 acres in the hills above Veterans Memorial Park, north of Sylmar, officials said.

The blaze was reported at 10:29 p.m. as a large fire visible across the San Fernando Valley.

Los Angeles City Fire Department had 100 firefighters responding, joined by crews from Angeles National Forest. A Los Angeles City representative reported that one structure may be involved, but that it appeared the fire was slowing down by 11:20 p.m. The situation is unstable, officials said.

Gusty Santa Ana winds up to 70 mph are forecast through Saturday, with a red flag warning in effect for canyons and valleys in Los Angeles and Ventura Counties.

Authorities said that no mandatory evacuations had been ordered yet and that residents should shelter in place and prepare their belongings to move out quickly.
