West Covina police fatally shoot 24-year-old man

Authorities say the two officers shot the man after he attacked them with a metal baton.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is investigating the fatal shooting of a 24-year-old man by two West Covina police officers.

The incident began about 5:30 p.m. Monday when officers from the West Covina Police Department responded to a report of a man peering into cars in the parking lot of a Target store in the 2300 block of South Azusa Avenue, said Deputy Derrick Thompson of the L.A. County Sheriff's Department.

When officers arrived, they found the man behind the store. He began to fight with the officers and beat them with a metal baton he had removed from one of their belts, Thompson said.

Both officers fired rounds from their weapons, knocking the man to the ground, Thompson said. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

One officer was taken to a hospital with a broken wrist and the other treated for minor injuries, Thompson said.
