Lakewood outlasts Servite in overtime
HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL
Anaheim Servite quarterback Cody Fajardo and Troy Nicolaus had just connected on a one-yard touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter to force overtime against Lakewood in a Pac-5 Division first-round playoff game Friday night at Cerritos College.
So when the Friars decided to go for the victory on a two-point conversion from the one-yard line in the extra period, they went back to the same play.
Nicolaus was open again but couldn't come up with the catch and Lakewood held on for a 35-34 victory that moved the Lancers into a quarterfinal against Mission Viejo.
Running back Jerry Stone had 231 yards and two touchdowns in 33 carries for Lakewood (5-6), which couldn't hold on to a 28-14 lead with fewer than four minutes to play.
Fajardo completed touchdown passes of nine yards to Rudy Guerrero and one yard to Nicolaus with 23 seconds left in regulation to complete the comeback.
Stone ran for a 16-yard touchdown in overtime and Servite's Greg Portis ran for a 25-yard touchdown to pull the Friars (7-4) to within a point.
Fajardo completed 24 of 35 passes for 220 yards and two touchdowns.

Tesoro rallies past Los Alamitos
Quarterback Robbie Picazo completed 14 of 22 passes for 126 yards and a touchdown and linebacker Jake Warden blocked two field-goal attempts as host Santa Margarita Tesoro (11-0) rallied from a second-quarter deficit to defeat Los Alamitos, 23-7, in the first round of the Pac-5 Division playoffs.
The Titans took advantage of three Los Alamitos (8-3) interceptions, including one in the final minute by Preston King, who returned it 16 yards for a score. However, Tesoro's game-clinching touchdown came midway through the third quarter when defensive lineman Issac Tago recovered teammate Adam Albitar's fumble in the end zone.
Zach Mitchell rushed for 174 yards in 22 carries for the Titans.
The game also featured a matchup between father and son coaches. Tesoro coach Brian Barnes beat his father, John Barnes, the most successful coach in Orange County history (273-81-7), in his first attempt.
