Diamond Bar girl, 3, dies after being hit by SUV

She, her father and sister were walking to school when the SUV driver lost control and ran into them. The father and sister are expected to survive.

A 3-year-old girl who was struck by a sport utility vehicle outside a Diamond Bar elementary school has died, officials said today.

Michelle Kwon of Diamond Bar died at 1:40 p.m. at UC Irvine Medical Center in Orange on Thanksgiving, said Larry Esslinger of the Orange County Sheriff-Coroner Department.

About 7:45 a.m. Wednesday, the girl, her 5-year-old sister and her father, Soonil Kwon, were walking to Maple Hill Elementary School when an SUV lost control and hit them, said Los Angeles police Lt. Leonard Williams of the Walnut station.

The three were airlifted to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center and UC Irvine Medical Center, Williams said. The girl's father and sister were hospitalized but expected to survive, Williams said.

Sheriff's investigators concluded that the driver of the Nissan Pathfinder had "inadvertently" caused the accident; the driver was released and not cited, Williams said.
