Manny Ramirez and Hiroki Kuroda were among seven players and coaches fined today in the wake of a bench-clearing incident in Sunday's National League championship series game at Dodger Stadium.
Ramirez and Kuroda were the only Dodgers players fined. Philadelphia Phillies players Shane Victorino and J.C. Romero were fined, as were Dodgers coaches Larry Bowa and Mariano Duncan and Phillies coach Davey Lopes.
Kuroda was fined $7,500, Ramirez $2,500, Duncan $1,000 and Bowa $500. Among the Phillies, Victorino was fined $2,500, Romero $1,000 and Lopes $500. No suspensions were issued.
The discipline resulted from a sequence in the third inning of Sunday's Game 3, in which Kuroda threw a pitch near the head of Victorino, in apparent retaliation for Phillies' pitcher Brett Myers throwing a pitch near the head of Ramirez in Game 2 and Clay Condrey throwing at Russell Martin's head in the second inning Sunday.
Victorino gestured at Kuroda but did not charge the mound, and no player except Ramirez rushed toward the scene. After Victorino grounded out, he and Kuroda exchanged words, and benches then cleared. No punches were thrown, and no one was ejected, but the three coaches fined were yelling and gesturing at the opposing team.
Romero appeared to engage in animated discussion with Ramirez as his Dodgers teammates pulled him away, although Romero said afterward there was nothing malicious going on.
"Manny's my boy," Romero said. "It was actually funny."
