Two separate shootings in South Los Angeles left two dead and a man injured, police said today.
The first occurred outside a house in the 600 block of West 68th Street about 9 p.m. Monday, said Officer Julianne Sohn, an LAPD spokeswoman. The victims were standing out front when at least two people walked up and opened fire on the pair, Sohn said.
Both victims were taken to a hospital, where Damon Lamont Jones, 38, was pronounced dead, according to detectives with the Los Angeles Police Department's 77th Street Station. The other victim was in stable condition, police said.
No immediate arrests were made, and it was unclear whether there were more than two shooters involved, but the two that witnesses saw fled on foot. Based on victims' statements, police believe the shooting was gang-related.
Less than an hour later, at about 9:50 p.m, a woman in her 40s was shot in the stomach and chest at 211 W. 71st Street, and died at a hospital. Her name has not been released.
There was no information on motive or suspects, but that shooting was not believed to be gang-related, Sohn said.
