October 30, 2008|times wire services

The Orange County Register, owned by Freedom Communications Inc., plans to eliminate 110 jobs, or about 8% of its workforce, in response to a drop in advertising and readership.

The cuts include about 30 newsroom employees, a spokesman said. The employees will be let go this week, he said. Parent company Freedom Communications Inc. is 45% owned by Blackstone Group and Providence Equity Partners Inc.

Average weekday circulation at the Register fell 15% to 236,270 in the six months ended Sept. 30 from a year earlier.
